I've been an educator for most of my career first teaching English, then becoming a school administrator. The current budget crunch in public school districts has made me reflect deeply - beyond the personal impact it has meant for me. My position will be cut, but that's not really what bothers me as much as the fact that education as a system, as a thing, must change. School reform is not the answer. What we need is a conceptual shift, a vision, an acknowledgment that we are collectively at a point in human revolution at which the exponential curve is taking off.
Then I reflected longer. And I realized that it's not only education that needs a new model. Medicine, law, energy resources, you name it - in many ways we need a new model on all strata of society. Of course, we cannot take on too much at once.
That is why for me to make a personal change in education, I need the energy to do so.
